Lamar Valley is often called the “Serengeti of North America” and is one of the best places in Yellowstone to view wildlife in its natural habitat. This broad, open valley is home to large herds of bison and elk, as well as pronghorn, coyotes, foxes, bald eagles, and the famous Yellowstone wolves. Early mornings and evenings are especially rewarding, when animals are most active and the light across the valley is breathtaking. With its sweeping views, winding river, and abundant wildlife, Lamar Valley offers one of the most authentic and unforgettable experiences in the parkespecially when explored with a knowledgeable guide who knows where and when to look.

First, look to the Bison. These are the true iron-men of the plains. They don’t just survive; they persevere. Clad in coats so thick they can ignore a blizzard, you’ll see them using their massive heads like snowplows, swinging through deep drifts to find a single blade of grass. But for the Wolves, winter is their "Golden Era." As the snow deepens, the odds shift. The Elk, magnificent as they are, struggle to move through the heavy powder, making them the ultimate target for a coordinated pack. Bald and Golden Eagles soaring on the frigid thermals.

This ultimately depends on what you are interested in, how much you want to see, and how much time you have available. Many people take a day tour of Yellowstone and come away thrilled with a full day packed with some of the best highlights the park has to offer, and several amazing wildlife encounters. For others, a day just isn’t enough; a slower pace is preferable to really take in the experience and to see more of Yellowstone’s unique geological features and stunning vistas. In this case, anywhere between two and five days is certainly sufficient.

In order for you to have an enjoyable experience in the field, it is imperative that you bring the following items to stay safe and comfortable:

• Any medications or necessary medical equipment you may need during the tour
• Sturdy, closed-toed shoes or boots
• Warm, comfortable layers. Gloves, scarf, beanie, wool socks, and warm layers are advised.
• Rain Jacket
• Yellowstone National Park entrance pass (any pass which grants entry into the park – weekly, yearly, interagency annual, senior, access, etc.)

You may also wish to bring the following:

• Hat and/or sunglasses
• Your favorite travel mug and/or reusable water bottle
• Camera
• Cell Phone (little to no cell service but good for pictures)
• Your preferred sunscreen
• Your preferred snacks and drinks, we will provide snacks and drinks as well as a light breakfast for sunset tours, light breakfast and lunch for full day tours and snacks for sunset tours
• May through September weather ranges from low temperatures near 10°F (-12°C) and snowing to highs near 80°F (27°C). Dressing for the weather will ensure you have an amazing day in the park!
